The phrase "checks and balances" refers to the idea that no one branch of government can do something without any other branch of government being able to review that action and, possibly, stop it. Thus, the legislature can pass a law, but the President can veto it - that veto power is a check against the power to pass laws. However, the legislature can pass a bill over a presidential veto, so long as there are enough votes. Thus, that power is another check against the President's veto power. These checks create a balance of power, where no one branch of government has too much authority. ~Ask.com
The legislative branch has a very important authority due to the fact that they make the laws! Without them to check the judicial branches, there might be decisions that are unconstitutional and harmful to all the beautiful people in the U.S.A. The legislative branch can make laws, but they have to be approved. This is how the other two branches are able to check the LB! Another interesting deal, is that people employed in the LB can stay for as long as they want or until they die! I wonder how many corpses they found hanging out in the fancy chair room!! Anyway, Legislative does have its set backs. It has restricted powers, like the above example of bills to be approved, but also the fact it can only override a veto with two thirds vote. That may not seem like a lot, but it is.
Now, with all these checking and balancing and such, we all come to a time in our lives and ask our selves: Did I leave the oven on? Is Jennifer Aniston ever going to find a hubby? Are penguins going to destroy us all? But most important..... Is Democracy dead?
I'd like to think not, but there are some things that make me feel differently at times. I'm not going to rant, don't worry.
I think I have the most faith in the Legislative branch just for the fact it needs approval from other branches and that decisions are not always final. That makes me feel like a citizen again. It makes me feel that someone is looking out for the best for this country and the inhabitants.

What about the judicial branch? Does it have any power over the executive? Just something to think about. Why is it thhat the legislative branch is the one you trust the most? What would make you trust the other branches more?
